AVON -- A family in Avon is fighting to keep their farm. If the school board has its way, that farm would be home to a new school. For Mary Jane Wolfe, a tour of her 25 acre farm is literally a walk down memory lane. "My mom used to pack picnic baskets and we'd have lunch out there underneath the tree," she said. The vast Avon property, with its creeks and riding trails, has been home to the Wolfes for three generations. According to the Wolfes, the Avon School Board is threatening to take the property by eminent domain. That means the board would buy the property at market value regardless of whether the Wolfes want to sell, and they don't/ John Traxler's not surprised. About 10 years ago, the board tried unsuccessfully to take his property. "We hired an attorney," he said. Traxler and other Avon residents, outraged by the board's intentions, have formed a group called Avon Citizens for Change. "I just hope she doesn't have to go through the pain and headache I did," Traxler said. "There are other properties for sale in Avon, like this 22 acre lot. Mary Jane wonders why the board doesn't buy it, especially since the owner wants to sell." No one from the school board was available to comment, leaving Mary Jane full of questions and anxiety. |

The Avon School Board wants to use eminent domain to take Mary Jane Wolfe's 25 acre's of land to build a new middle school. Wolfe has lived on her property on Center Road in Avon since she was born. The property has been in her family for three generations. Her land butts up to where the property of the current middle school ends. Fox 8 News tried contacting the Avon School Board and superintendent, but no officials was available for comment on the issue. A recent newsletter for the school board to Avon citizens states: "The use of the school district's statutory power of eminent domain did not occur lightly. We all consider its use one of last resort. We wanted the very best site, not just any site, and we knew that any chosen would likely meet with the same opposition we now see as a result of our decision." A special school board meeting is being held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the library of the Heritage North Elementary School on Detroit Road to discuss the issue. |
